Artificial Grass Infill Replacement

Placed between the fibers/blades of artificial grass, Artificial grass infill is crucial for maintaining your lawn’s natural appearance and feel. When you step on your artificial grass lawn and notice how comfortable and soft it feels, that’s your infill at work.

Over time, your infill can shift, and the infill levels can decrease as the material gets carried away by the wind, birds, or rough weather. Maintaining your infill is crucial to keep your lawn looking its best and performing at the highest level.

Three Key Roles of Artificial Grass Infill:

Stability and Weight: Infill anchors the turf, preventing it from shifting, wrinkling, or becoming dislodged. It adds the necessary weight to keep the carpet securely in place, especially in high-traffic or pet areas.

Shock Absorption and Safety: Infill acts as a cushioning layer, absorbing impact and reducing joint strain, minimizing injury risk during sports or play. This “mattress” effect makes the surface more comfortable and safe.

Blade Support and Structure: By filling the space between fibers, infill keeps the artificial grass blades upright, preventing matting and maintaining a realistic, lush appearance.

Revitalize Your Artificial Grass Landscape

Infill is a heavy component layer that helps keep the turf weighted, reducing the risk of wrinkling and lifting. Without proper infill depth and weight, artificial turf is prone to movement across seasons.

There are dozens of infill offerings for artificial turf, and most fall under one of these three categories:

  • Rubber: Crumb Rubber, Coated Rubber
  • Sand: Coated Sand, Dyed sand, Silica Sand
  • Organic/Natural: Camofill, Zeolite, and Others

Artificial Grass Infill Replacement

Green-R Turf uses only organic and natural infill products for our installations and replacement services. We care about the environment and use only natural infill that meets safety requirements, enhances soil and water quality, reduces pollution, and promotes a self-sustaining resource cycle. Our choice of infill is eco-friendly, water-efficient, odor-neutralizing, and, most importantly, safe for children and pets.

The frequency of infill replenishment can vary depending on the usage of artificial grass. Generally, it’s recommended to perform this every eighteen months to ensure optimal performance. Synthetic grass infill is a vital component of a high-quality artificial turf installation.

Key Benefits of Artificial Grass Infill include:

Stability and Weight: Infill adds weight to the turf, preventing it from shifting, lifting, or developing wrinkles. As discussed in The Motz Group’s FAQ, it is a critical component of synthetic turf systems.

Appearance and Structure: It keeps synthetic fibers upright and prevents matting, maintaining a natural-looking, lush appearance.

Longevity and Protection: Infill protects the turf backing from UV damage and foot-traffic wear, significantly extending the turf’s lifespan.

Drainage Improvement: It creates space between turf fibers, allowing water to drain efficiently through the backing.

Safety and Comfort: Infill provides cushioning that enhances the feel of the lawn and adds shock absorption for playgrounds and sports fields.

Pet Odor Management: Specific types, such as odor-absorbing infill, can reduce bacterial growth and pet odors.

Infill for artificial grass generally needs to be replaced or replenished every 5 to 7 years, though high-traffic areas may require top-ups every 18 months to 3 years. It is recommended to check infill levels annually for signs of compaction, turf blade flattening, or unevenness, especially in high-use areas.

Key Indicators for Infill Replacement

Flattened Blades: If the turf fibers look limp, matted, or will not stand up after brushing, the infill is likely depleted.

Visible Infill Reduction: If the turf base is exposed or you notice significant gaps, it is time for a top-up.

Increased Hardness: The surface feels harder, which can indicate compacted, old infill.

Maintenance Tips

Annual Check: Check infill depth at least once a year, preferably before Spring or Summer.

Brush Regularly: Use a stiff broom or brush to keep turf fibers upright and evenly distribute the existing infill.

High-Traffic Areas: Areas frequently used by pets or children may require more frequent, smaller infill applications.

Which Infill Works Best for Each Application?
Landscape Application:

For budget-conscious users, silica sand infill is suitable for general front- or backyard installations where pets and children are absent. With children and pets, a more specialized infill is recommended.

Pet Application:

All-natural infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer neutralizes and removes Odors and bacteria. It integrates with other components to control bacterial and mold growth and odors. When paired with one of our Microban antimicrobial artificial grasses, adding an antimicrobial layer to the infill will help control odors.

Putting Green Application:

Silica sand is recommended for most texturized putting green applications. This finer sand will better fill in between putting green blades than the coarser sand used in landscape applications.

Playground Application:

All-natural infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer is recommended for its integrated antimicrobial properties. The added level of protection can offer peace of mind as children tumble and roll across the lawn.

Athletic Application:

Indoor fitness areas using Multi-Sport Turf do not require infill. However, when Multi-Sport is used in outdoor fitness applications, All-Natural Infill Zeolite / Zeodorizer is recommended because artificial turf expands and contracts in the sun.
